Donnaven, our 8 yr. old nephew arrives to Delhi

Traveling for 40 days and 40 nights with an 8 yr. old

On Tuesday, June 3rd, we picked up our nephew, Donnaven. We were quite concerned about him. After all, traveling for 20 hrs can be grueling even for adults. However, when he got to the Delhi airport, it was as if had just gotten of a 5 minute car ride. Donnaven is quiet a trooper. It is his social disposition, and his addiction to video games that probably got him through.

The idea to bring Donnaven, our eight year old nephew along with us for part of the trip came to us not long after we decided to go on the trip. We thought it would be an eye opening experience for him. Many people that we love and respect disagreed with us. However, while 8 years is still young to understand, we knew we would only do this kind of trip once in our life-times and would regret not bringing him.

We've been with him for 20 days thus far and have managed to keep our sanity, although barely. On a positive note, its amazing to see how easy it is for him to make friends and how welcoming people from all around the world are to kids. We've also been surprised by how much he has learned in a short time. He can speak a little Hindi and Kiswahili, knows currency exchanges rates for 2 different countries and has even learned about the major world religions. If we define success by how much he learns, than his trip with us has already been a success.
